Several famines in parts of Ethiopia in the 1980's left over one million people dead. The famines were caused by years of drought along with internal civil war between government and insurgent forces. As part of its containment efforts, the government of Ethiopia failed to alert the world of the dire need for relief for its population until the crisis was well under way. The now famous rock concert Live Aid, organized by British musician Bob Geldof raised over 150 million dollars to assist with famine relief efforts. The young famine victim at left has lost all traces of human dignity including their identification as either male or female as a result of the loss of nearly all tissue beneath the skin.
